Wi-Fi antenna orientation tips for better signal strength

Optimizing Wi-Fi signal strength can often be achieved by adjusting router antennas rather than upgrading service plans or purchasing new hardware. A common misconception is that pointing the antenna directly toward a device with a weak signal, such as a TV or computer, will increase connectivity. However, technical principles suggest otherwise.

According to technical documentation from Cisco, common dipole antennas radiate signal in a 360-degree pattern on a horizontal plane, creating a coverage area shaped like a donut when viewed vertically. NETGEAR notes that signals typically propagate perpendicular to the direction of the antenna. Consequently, a vertical antenna is most effective for covering a single floor or horizontal plane.

Testing by TP-Link indicates that antenna orientation significantly impacts signal intensity. In tests measuring signal on a horizontal plane, a vertical antenna achieved -26 dBm, a 45-degree tilt resulted in -35 dBm, and a horizontal position yielded -39 dBm. In these measurements, values closer to zero represent a stronger signal.
