Wi-Fi router antenna technology and MIMO functionality
The number of antennas on a Wi-Fi router is determined by home size, internet usage, and the number of connected devices. While older routers often featured a single antenna, modern models can include up to eight to accommodate faster internet speeds and increased data demands.
Multiple antennas are not merely a marketing tactic; they function effectively through MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) technology. MIMO allows routers to use spatial multiplexing to create multiple data paths, enabling the transfer of larger amounts of data simultaneously. Without MIMO technology, simply adding more antennas may not improve performance and could potentially cause technical issues. The effectiveness of these antennas depends on the router's internal hardware to manage these separate data streams efficiently.
