Wi-Fi router power usage and safety advice for households

Families are advised to consider turning off or unplugging Wi-Fi routers when leaving home for extended periods, such as several days or a week. Although Wi-Fi routers typically consume low power—averaging around 6W with a range of 2W to 20W—continuous operation can lead to noticeable electricity costs over time.

Beyond energy savings, unplugging the device can mitigate risks associated with electrical incidents. While routers are not as high-risk as large appliances, they remain susceptible to voltage surges or power supply malfunctions. In an empty home, such issues may go undetected, whereas an occupied home allows for quicker response. Additionally, allowing the device to rest can reduce heat buildup from continuous operation.

However, users should not unplug routers if they rely on smart home systems, security cameras, or other devices that require remote internet connectivity while they are away.
