Wiay Island in Scotland offered for sale for $1.3 million
Wiay Island, a remote uninhabited island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, has been put up for sale for £995,000 (approximately $1.3 million). The property, managed by real estate firm Bell Ingram, covers roughly 970 acres (3.93 square kilometers).
The island holds historical significance due to its connection to the Jacobite rising of 1745. Following his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, reportedly sought refuge on the island while fleeing toward France.
Physically, the island features a landscape of sandy beaches, freshwater lochs, rocky coasts, and diverse wildlife, including golden eagles and white-tailed sea eagles. While it once supported a small agricultural community, the island has remained without permanent residents since 1901. Remaining structures include the ruins of an old stone house overlooking Bagh na Murla Bay. Prospective buyers should note that the island lacks basic services and any restoration of existing ruins would require new planning permissions.
