Mexico faces widespread power outages amid heatwave

Over the past ten days, extreme heat and grid overload have triggered rolling blackouts and voltage fluctuations in at least 20 Mexican states, from the north to the southeast. The most affected regions include Veracruz, Morelos, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila. Residents report loss of refrigeration, damage to appliances and interruptions to businesses and public services. In Tabasco, citizens staged protests against repeated cuts, while in the Jardines de Aragón neighbourhood of Mexico City, demonstrators threatened to block streets to pressure the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Authorities cite high air‑conditioner use, aging transformers and insufficient infrastructure as primary causes. The CFE has been urged to provide clear explanations and rapid repairs, as the power shortages exacerbate the ongoing heatwave and strain daily life for millions of Mexicans.
