Widnes Vikings threaten to withdraw from 1895 Cup final over scheduling dispute

The Widnes Vikings have warned they may pull out of the 1895 Cup final against London Broncos unless they receive a full week to prepare. The club faces a congested schedule that would give them only three days between a Championship match against Workington Town on August 23, a game with Sheffield Eagles on August 27, and the cup final on August 31. Chairman Stuart Murphy described the situation as “absolutely outrageous” and said the proposed timetable is “100% not acceptable in terms of player welfare”. The Rugby Football League (RFL) has asked Widnes to play the final on the 27th, a date Widnes says would compromise player health and registration rules. London Broncos have been allowed a longer recovery period, intensifying the perceived inequity.
