Malcolm‑Jamal Warner's Widow Files $1.2 Million Lawsuit Against Mother Over Estate

Actor Malcolm‑Jamal Warner died on July 20, 2025, after drowning during a family vacation in Costa Rica at age 54. He is survived by his wife Tenisha Warner and their nine‑year‑old daughter.

On the first anniversary of his death, Tenisha Warner filed a complaint in DeKalb County Superior Court in Decatur, Georgia, naming Warner’s mother, Pamela Warner, as a defendant. Pamela is identified in the filing as the successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust, which was created in 1996.

The lawsuit asserts that a May 2022 prenuptial agreement required Warner to provide several financial benefits that were never fulfilled: a $1 million term life‑insurance policy naming Tenisha as beneficiary, annual tax‑free anniversary payments of $16,000 (totaling more than $50,000), contributions to a Roth IRA, and a monthly salary of $5,000 for serving as his chief of staff. The plaintiff seeks at least $1,276,042 in principal, plus interest, attorney fees and a court order preventing any distribution of trust assets while the case proceeds.

Tenisha Warner said she had tried to resolve the matter privately for a year and filed suit only because she “had no choice” to protect herself and her daughter. Pamela Warner has not publicly commented on the filing.
