Wielkopolska sees surge in Lyme disease cases before summer

From the start of the year to 15 June 2026, Wielkopolska recorded 573 confirmed cases of Lyme disease, a tick‑borne illness that can cause serious neurological, joint or cardiac problems if untreated. The highest monthly counts occurred in January and March, each exceeding 60 cases, with 163 reported in May and a further 173 by mid‑June, suggesting a likely rise as the tick season peaks in summer and early autumn.

In 2025 the region logged 3,205 cases, with July and August being the peak months (766 and 691 cases respectively). Seven cases of neuroborreliosis—a severe form affecting the nervous system—have been confirmed in 2026, all requiring hospitalization, while 14 patients have been hospitalized for Lyme disease overall up to mid‑June. Health officials warn that ticks are now common in urban parks, recreation areas, allotment gardens and even residential lawns, and advise proper clothing, repellents and careful skin checks after outdoor activities.
