Wien Energie connects Tiergarten Schönbrunn to district heating
Wien Energie has expanded its district heating network in the Hietzing district to include the Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the world's oldest zoo. This transition moves the historic site away from gas heating.
The new heating system will supply animal enclosures, administrative buildings, catering facilities, and the desert house. The previous gas boiler plant, which provided ten megawatts of power across the 17-hectare area, has been dismantled as part of this transition.
Ulli Sima, City Councilor for Urban Development, Mobility, and Vienna City Works, stated that the connection supports Vienna's goal of phasing out gas and increasing independence from fossil fuels. The expansion of the network also enables the connection of more than 60 additional buildings in the area.
