Wiener Neustadt train derailment disrupts rail traffic

Two freight wagons derailed near the Wiener Neustadt exit station in the early hours of Monday, causing significant damage to overhead lines. The incident occurred around 1:00 AM when the wagons reportedly rolled away on their own and struck an overhead line mast.

No injuries were reported. However, the damage has caused massive disruptions to rail services at Wiener Neustadt main station, which is the largest station in Lower Austria by traffic volume. Affected routes include the South Line, the Aspang Line, and the Puchberg and Gutensteiner lines.

ÖBB has implemented rail replacement bus services between Wiener Neustadt and Bad Fischau-Brunn, Neunkirchen, and Lanzenkirchen. Long-distance services on the South Line are also facing cancellations and significant delays. Passengers are advised to check their connections and expect much longer travel times. The exact cause of why the wagons rolled away remains unclear and is currently under investigation.
