Wiener Philharmonic appoints Tugan Sokhiev to conduct 2027 New Year’s Concert

The Wiener Philharmonic announced its 2026‑27 season at a press conference in Salzburg, highlighting the New Year’s Concert on 1 January 2027. Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev will lead the concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, marking his first appearance in this role. The program will centre on the 200th anniversary of Josef Strauss, with the orchestra also performing works by Ravel, Debussy and Prokofiev in a pre‑concert rehearsal.

The season will feature ten subscription concerts showcasing contemporary and historically exiled composers, including Lutosławski’s Fourth Symphony, Adès’s *Asyla*, Penderecki’s *Metamorphoses* and pieces by Schoenberg and Korngold. Orchestra president Daniel Froschauer and managing director Michael Bladerer emphasized the partnership with Austria’s public broadcaster ORF and the continued artistic collaboration with the Salzburg Festival.
