Wiener Staatsoper launches 2026/27 season with Don Carlo

The Wiener Staatsoper has commenced its 2026/27 season, marked by the performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Don Carlo’. The season opening features a production directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, a staging noted for its socially critical approach that has previously polarized audiences.

In addition to the main house performances, the season kick-off includes ‘Opern Air’ in the Burggarten, an event expected to draw up to 12,000 people. The program features a variety of core repertoire works from composers such as Mozart, Rossini, Wagner, and Puccini. Musical direction for the season's festivities includes Marco Armiliato, with performances by artists such as Asmik Grigorian, Piotr Beczała, Juan Diego Flórez, and Ludovic Tézier.

Director Bogdan Roščić has chosen to lead the season with Serebrennikov’s production, despite past controversies regarding the direction. The repertoire for September also includes a return of Francesco Cilea’s ‘Adriana Lecouvreur’ starring Ermonela Jaho.
