Wiener Volksoper premieres new production of Chicago

The Wiener Volksoper has staged its first production of the musical Chicago, directed by Lotte de Beer with choreography by Arielle Smith. This new interpretation departs from traditional glamorous depictions of the 1920s, opting instead for a dark, industrial, and gritty aesthetic.

Set against a somber prison landscape designed by Christof Hetzer, the production utilizes a revolving stage and minimalist props to emphasize a sense of violence and realism. The staging incorporates elements of epic theater, with performers occasionally breaking the fourth wall by addressing the audience or the conductor, Maayan Franco.

The production features German lyrics by Erika Gesell and Helmut Baumann, while maintaining the original English songs. The performance has received significant audience acclaim, including standing ovations.
