Wiesbaden Approves Municipal Heat Planning to Reach Climate‑Neutral Supply by 2045

The magistrate of the German city of Wiesbaden adopted a municipal heat‑planning strategy on 23 June 2026, which will be submitted to the Hessian state authorities by 30 June. Mayor Gert‑Uwe Mende highlighted the “close and constructive cooperation” with the utility ESWE Versorgung AG, noting that the plan provides a practical roadmap for the city’s future energy supply. Deputy Mayor and Environment Secretary Christiane Hinninge added that the plan is a central component for making Wiesbaden’s heat supply climate‑neutral by 2045, guiding decisions for administration, politics, businesses and residents.

The plan analyses the current heat network, renewable‑energy potential and waste‑heat resources, outlining scenarios that combine district heating, heat pumps, industrial waste‑heat, river‑water heat, geothermal and other renewable sources. It aims to expand district heating in central districts while promoting heat‑pump solutions where district heating is uneconomical, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse‑gas emissions.
