Wiesbaden coalition talks stall as CDU seeks new partners

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Wiesbaden announced the end of its coalition negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and indicated it will open talks with the Greens, Volt, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the “Pro Auto” group. The SPD criticised the move, saying the CDU conducted secret parallel negotiations that violated a prior agreement to negotiate exclusively with the SPD. SPD leaders accused the CDU of breaking trust and called for a stable, progressive coalition that can deliver a climate‑neutral city by 2045.

The Left party warned that the emerging centre‑right alliance could lead to a “social cut‑back” for vulnerable residents and offered to form a left‑leaning coalition with the SPD, Greens and Volt. The political deadlock has sparked sharp debate in the Wiesbaden city council over the future direction of traffic policy, climate goals and fiscal stability.

City officials, including Mayor Gert‑Uwe Mende, have urged all parties to find a reliable governing majority that can serve the city for the next five years.
