Wiesbaden faces trash‑can fire crisis as 250 containers destroyed

Since the start of 2026, waste‑management services in Wiesbaden have recorded more than 250 trash‑can fires, a three‑fold increase compared with the combined totals of 2024 and 2025. The majority of the destroyed containers are large four‑wheel bins, with 142 of them lost, driving replacement costs into the mid‑five‑digit range.

The city’s waste‑service operator, Entsorgungsbetriebe der Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden (ELW), warns that the surge in fires is straining logistics, raising the risk of shortages in replacement containers and requiring extra personnel for cleanup and security. ELW operations manager Markus Patsch said each burned bin “is far more than mere property damage” and can jeopardise public safety.

Residents have been urged to keep their bins indoors until collection day and to report any suspicious activity to the police to help curb further incidents.
