Wiesbaden sports field under scrutiny after player injury

A player has sustained a serious ankle fracture at the Niederfeld sports field in Wiesbaden following recent repairs to the artificial turf. The injury occurred during a C-League match between FC Freudenberg II and VfB Westend II, involving goalkeeper Mathias Heller.

The field had previously been flagged for cracks in mid-August, which led to a canceled Verbandsliga derby. Although the city performed repairs and released the pitch for use on August 21, the Westend coach claims the injury was caused by a damaged section of the turf.

Wiesbaden's sports office stated that the pitch underwent multiple inspections and daily checks by staff, who found no obvious hazards. Consequently, the city does not currently see a reason to close the field, despite acknowledging that the condition of the turf is not optimal.
