HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables with 96Gbps bandwidth enter market

The first certified HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables, capable of supporting up to 96Gbps bandwidth, are beginning to enter the consumer market. This represents a doubling of the 48Gbps limit found in HDMI 2.1. Wieson Technologies has announced that its 2-meter Ultra96 cable (model AB9856-40113020-00) has successfully completed testing and certification through UL Solutions, an authorized testing center for the HDMI Forum.

Other manufacturers, including Silkland and Elecom, are also releasing certified Ultra96 cables. While these cables support advanced capabilities such as uncompressed 4K at 240Hz, 8K at 60Hz, and resolutions up to 16K, the full benefits cannot be realized immediately. Current hardware, including televisions, gaming consoles, and graphics cards, does not yet support the HDMI 2.2 standard. Industry experts, including leadership from the HDMI Licensing Administrator, suggest that compatible devices and architectures, such as next-generation Nvidia and AMD GPUs, are not expected to arrive until approximately 2027.

Despite the lack of immediate compatible hardware, the cables remain backward compatible with HDMI 2.1 and earlier versions. The new standard also introduces the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to improve audio-video synchronization in multi-device environments.
