WiFi router nightly shutdown may reduce speed and security

Turning off WiFi routers at night to save electricity or increase security may lead to unintended technical consequences. While a router typically consumes between 8 and 15 watts, the annual energy savings from turning it off for eight hours every night is estimated at only about 10 euros (approximately 75 DKK).

Technical drawbacks include reduced internet speeds and security risks. On copper-based connections, internet service providers use Dynamic Line Management (DLM) to stabilize lines. If a router is turned off regularly, the system may interpret the connection as unstable and automatically lower the bandwidth to compensate. Furthermore, manufacturers often deploy critical firmware and security updates during low-traffic hours in the early morning; a powered-down router may miss these updates, leaving the network vulnerable to known security flaws.
