WiFi router usage advice: Risks of unplugging devices

Unplugging WiFi routers to save electricity or allow the device to rest can inadvertently disrupt smart home ecosystems. While users may believe turning off the router is efficient when no one is actively browsing, modern routers are designed for continuous operation.

Manufacturers such as NETGEAR state that routers should only be powered down in seasonal homes that are entirely vacant and lack security systems or smart devices. Disconnecting the power can immediately interrupt remote control features and automated alerts for essential devices like security cameras, smart lights, and video doorbells.

TP-Link has also advised users to maintain a stable 2.4 GHz band and avoid scheduling network shutdowns if smart devices are present. While cutting power does not cause mechanical damage to the electronics, it creates significant security gaps by disabling real-time monitoring and emergency notifications.
