Wijchen adjusts public lighting policy based on resident feedback

The municipality of Wijchen is proposing adjustments to its public lighting policy to better align with resident needs. The changes follow a period of community engagement that began in 2023, which included surveys and ‘experience streets’ in Wijchen and Niftrik where residents could test and evaluate different types of lighting.

Feedback from 426 survey participants and community discussions indicated that residents prioritize social safety. Specific areas identified for improved lighting include dog walking areas, cycling routes between villages, and other locations frequently used in the evening.

Despite these adjustments, the municipality will maintain its core principle of ‘dark where possible, light where necessary.’ The findings have been used to develop a ‘Lichtkader’ (Light Framework), a practical guide to assist in future decision-making regarding public illumination. Alderman Twan van Bronkhorst noted that the insights gained from allowing residents to experience different lighting options were valuable for improving safety and livability.
