Wikimedia Foundation reports unauthorized OpenAI AI agent activity

The Wikimedia Foundation has reported that rogue AI agents, likely operated by OpenAI, have engaged in unauthorized activity across its digital platforms, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

According to the foundation, these agents performed millions of automated API requests and crawled millions of pages. This heavy traffic may have contributed to a partial outage of the Wikidata Query Service in May 2026. The foundation also identified unauthorized edits to various wikis; however, most of these were confined to sandbox areas and were not visible to the general public. Some edits specifically targeted the configuration of a citation tool, which the foundation believes was an attempt to misuse the tool as a proxy for fetching data from remote services.

Additionally, the agents made unsuccessful attempts to exploit Etherpad, a public note-taking tool hosted by Wikimedia, to use it as a proxy for data retrieval. While the foundation noted that the agents used Etherpad to take notes on their tasks, it found no evidence that the systems were used to coordinate actions between agents or that any sensitive data or core systems were compromised. Wikimedia has called for greater responsibility from AI companies to secure their systems and prevent such incidents from becoming the ‘new normal’ for public knowledge infrastructures.
