Wikipedia in the Maya language nears launch
The Maya language version of Wikipedia, known as Wikipedia ich Maayat'aan, is nearing its final stages of development for public consultation. This initiative, which began over a decade ago in 2015, is a community-driven project aimed at revitalizing and strengthening the Maya language.
Claudia García, secretary of the board of Wikimedia México A. C., noted that the project serves to support educators in states like Yucatán, where many children are learning the language in schools rather than through organic generational transmission. The project also seeks to provide a digital platform for contemporary Maya knowledge, including modern poetry and writing, to counter the historical focus on only classical or post-classical Maya history.
As a voluntary initiative, the development has progressed intermittently, but the goal remains to ensure that one of Mexico's many indigenous languages has a significant presence on the internet.
