Wil Wheaton boycotts Harry Potter reboot to support trans rights

Actor Wil Wheaton has announced his intention to boycott the upcoming HBO Harry Potter television reboot, citing support for transgender rights. In a response on the social media platform Threads, Wheaton stated that he and many others would not be watching the series because they are “standing with trans people.”

The decision comes amid ongoing controversy regarding author J. K. Rowling, who is serving as an executive producer on the new adaptation. Rowling has faced significant criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates due to her public statements and activism concerning gender identity. Critics argue that consuming Harry Potter content provides financial support to Rowling and her views.

HBO executive Casey Bloys has addressed the controversy, stating that the company’s priority is “what’s on the screen” and emphasizing that the story is about love and self-acceptance. The upcoming series will adapt the seven original books across multiple seasons, featuring a cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
