Wilber Honório Muñoz found alive after disappearing in Marajó Bay
Colombian environmental activist and athlete Wilber Honório Muñoz, known as ‘Homem-Peixe’ (Fish-Man), was found alive after disappearing during a swimming crossing of the Marajó Bay in Pará, Brazil.
Muñoz was participating in the ‘Amazonas a Pulmão’ expedition, an effort to raise awareness about Amazonian preservation and river pollution, specifically plastic waste. He had set out around 4:00 AM to complete a planned 24-kilometer stretch, one of the most difficult stages of his journey. During the early morning hours, heavy sea spray and low visibility caused his support team to lose visual contact with him and another participant.
Following the disappearance, search operations involving boats, jet skis, and drones were launched. Muñoz was eventually located near Vila do Conde. After being found, he resumed his expedition, which has covered approximately 6,600 kilometers of swimming.
