Wilco van Schaik apologizes for remarks on Bodø/Glimt facilities
Wilco van Schaik, the managing director of NEC Nijmegen, has issued an apology following controversial remarks regarding the facilities at the Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt.
Prior to a Champions League play-off match in Norway, Van Schaik described the locker rooms at Bodø/Glimt as ‘bric-à-brac’ and ‘dreary,’ suggesting the club had used a makeshift tub from a hardware store for ice baths. These comments drew significant attention from the Norwegian press and a response from Bodø/Glimt.
Speaking on the podcast ‘De Bestuurskamer,’ Van Schaik admitted he chose his words poorly and that his remarks were taken out of context. He clarified that both clubs face similar logistical constraints, noting that NEC players have also had to use trash cans as makeshift ice baths. He expressed regret for the impact of his statements, stating, ‘I looked in the mirror. It was a wrong choice of words.’
