Wilcza Góra: An extinct volcano in Lower Silesia, Poland

Wilcza Góra, also known as Wilkołak, is a notable geological site located within the Land of Extinct Volcanoes in Lower Silesia, Poland. Standing at 367 meters above sea level, the site is not a traditional volcanic cone but a volcanic neck—the exposed remains of a volcanic vent formed approximately 15.5 million years ago.

The landscape has been significantly altered by historical basalt mining. The extracted basalt was used in major construction projects, including the Warsaw Metro and the Palace of Culture and Science. Mining operations at the site concluded in 2019 following a significant slope collapse.

Historically, the site has served various purposes, including hosting a tourist shelter in the 19th century and a glider landing field during the German era. To protect its unique natural features, the Wilcza Góra nature reserve was established in 1959.
