Wild boar management and road safety discussed in Ourense
During a technical session organized by the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) in Ourense, officials discussed the impact of wild boar populations on agriculture and road safety. The Xunta de Galicia presented a coordinated management strategy designed to address the challenges posed by the species across different landscapes.
Marisol Díaz, Director General of Natural Heritage, emphasized that mitigating the effects of wild boar requires a combination of damage prevention, population control, infrastructure improvements, sanitary surveillance, and institutional cooperation. The Galician government has outlined five complementary lines of action: providing aid for electric fencing to protect crops, economic compensation for agricultural damage, population control through hunting and live captures, improved data monitoring of species density, and the better utilization of hunted meat.
Estimates indicate a population of approximately 82,200 specimens, with an average density of 2.77 individuals per square kilometer.
