Wild boar populations cause agricultural concerns in Italy
Wild boar populations are causing significant agricultural and economic concerns across different regions of Italy. In the Vibonese area of Calabria, local political representatives have expressed support for regional President Roberto Occhiuto’s efforts to address the growing presence of wild boars in rural and agricultural zones. Stakeholders are calling for improved monitoring, better prevention tools like fencing, and compensation for farmers facing crop and land damage.
Simultaneously, in the Lazio region north of Rome, 20 mayors and two municipal presidents have issued an urgent appeal to the regional government and the extraordinary commissioner for African Swine Fever (ASF). Following the detection of ASF traces in the municipality of Riano, local leaders are demanding an extraordinary plan for wild boar containment and depopulation. They warn that prolonged restrictions on movement and hunting to control the disease could lead to economic disaster for the local tourism and agricultural sectors.
