Wild boar populations cause significant disruption in Berlin and Warsaw

Wild boar populations are causing increasing issues in major European cities, leading to property damage and safety concerns.

In Berlin, authorities have ordered a hunt at the Ruhleben cemetery following extensive damage to graves, paths, and green spaces caused by animals foraging in the soil. To ensure public safety during the operation, which involves hunters using live ammunition and hunting dogs, the cemetery administration has closed the grounds to visitors. The district office reported that six wild boars were recently sighted on the premises.

In Warsaw, the city is struggling with a surge in wild boar activity, recording 18,082 reports this year alone. The animals have been seen in residential areas, scavenging through trash and causing traffic accidents and direct attacks on people. Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski has called for updated regulations, noting that current national and European laws regarding African Swine Fever (ASF) limit the city's ability to relocate animals, forcing a reliance on culling which has not yet reduced the population.
