A study conducted in the province of Málaga has highlighted the public health risks associated with the increasing presence of wild boars in urban areas of the Costa del Sol. The research, which analyzed 80 wild boars and feral pigs from municipalities including Marbella, Fuengirola, and Benahavís, found that over 90% of the animals had been exposed to a pathogen. Furthermore, approximately 86% of the subjects carried agents with zoonotic potential.

Dr. Esther Hurtado, Head of Emergency Services at Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella, clarified that while these findings indicate a risk that requires monitoring due to increased human-wildlife interaction, they do not constitute a sanitary alarm situation. She emphasized that the presence of pathogens does not automatically mean diseases are being transmitted to humans.

Health experts recommend that the public avoid contact with these animals and refrain from feeding them. In the event of any bites or wounds caused by wild boars, individuals are advised to seek immediate medical attention in an emergency department.
