Wild horse management sparks debate in Oregon and Colorado

Federal agencies and Colorado officials are managing wild horse populations through different approaches amid environmental and welfare concerns. In Oregon, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Department of the Interior have launched a program to assist approximately 1,200 wild horses facing extreme drought. Officials plan to transport about 500 horses from the Sheepshead/Heath Creek area to offsite holding facilities to ensure access to food and water and to support rangeland recovery.

In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis and Representative Joe Neguse have requested an “immediate freeze on upcoming roundups” conducted via helicopter. The request follows a monthlong roundup in the Piceance Basin that captured nearly 900 horses and resulted in nine deaths or euthanizations due to pre-existing conditions. The officials described helicopter methods as “inhumane and unnecessary,” citing risks of panic and injury, and have asked the Department of the Interior to postpone further roundups in the Sand Wash Basin to allow for more stakeholder involvement.
