Wild swimming popularity rises in the UK and Ireland

Wild swimming is experiencing a significant rise in popularity across the UK and Ireland. According to a report by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the number of regular participants has more than doubled from approximately 266,000 adults in 2016-17 to 543,000 by 2023-24.

Kate Rew, founder of the Outdoor Swimming Society, attributes this trend to a desire for adventure and a connection with nature. While local rivers, lakes, and coastal stretches offer diverse opportunities, experts emphasize that safety remains the top priority. Swimmers are advised to research water conditions, currents, and legal access points, noting that environments like rivers can change rapidly following rainfall.
