Wildfire crosses Bulgaria-Greece border into Soufli region

A large wildfire that originated in Bulgaria has crossed the border into the Soufli region of Greece, specifically affecting the Local Community of Roussa. The fire has been active for at least two days, burning through forest land, deciduous trees, and low vegetation. In Bulgaria, the Mayor of Ivaylovgrad has declared a partial state of emergency, with reports indicating between 1,000 and 1,500 stremma of land have been affected.

In Greece, firefighting efforts are intensive. The operation involves approximately 220 to 250 firefighters, 48 vehicles, and 12 specialized hiking teams from various EMODE units. Aerial support includes 12 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters, one of which serves as a coordination hub. To bolster ground forces, 30 foresters from the 1st EMODE are being airlifted via a C27 military aircraft from Elefsina to Alexandroupoli.

Deputy Chief of the Fire Service, Lieutenant General Anastasios Pappas, is on-site to coordinate the response. Strong winds are complicating containment efforts, occasionally causing the fire to transition from creeping to crown fires. While the blaze remains uncontrolled in some mountainous areas, authorities report that flames have not yet threatened residential settlements.
