Wildfire in B.C. and deadly earthquake in Colombia
In British Columbia, 100 Mexican firefighters are arriving to assist in combating the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland. The blaze, located on the western shores of Okanagan Lake, has resulted in one fatality and forced the evacuation of approximately 20,000 people. RCMP have initiated a criminal investigation into the cause of the fire, which has already destroyed multiple homes.
In Colombia, search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Choco region following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The tremor, described by Colombia’s Geological Service as the country’s strongest this century, has killed at least 111 people and caused extensive damage to hundreds of buildings. The earthquake was felt as far away as Bogotá and has been followed by numerous aftershocks.
