Wildfire in Calenzana, Corsica destroys homes and vehicles

A major wildfire broke out in the northwest of Corsica near Calenzana on the afternoon of Thursday, August 27, 2026. The fire, which originated near the Clos Orsini estate, spread rapidly through dry vegetation and macchia, fueled by wind gusts reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.

By the following morning, reports confirmed that over 50 hectares had been burned. The blaze caused significant property damage in the Montegrosso area, destroying seven houses, five mobile homes, and approximately ten vehicles. While no fatalities were reported, three individuals—including two firefighters—were hospitalized in Calvi due to smoke inhalation.

Emergency response efforts involved approximately 170 to 200 personnel on the ground, supported by aerial assets including four water-bombing aircraft, two helicopters, a reconnaissance plane, and a Puma helicopter. The fire was successfully contained by late evening, shortly before midnight, though emergency services remained on site to monitor for new outbreaks. Displaced residents were relocated to the Calvi sports center or with relatives, and some areas experienced power outages.
