Wildfire management faces challenges in data utility and media perception

Experts are highlighting the complexities of wildfire management as fire seasons become more frequent and intense globally. Research led by University of Colorado Professor Jennifer Balch indicates that while media coverage often focuses on crown fires—fast-spreading, high-intensity fires that are difficult to control—these represent only a small fraction of the most destructive wildfires. Destructive events, such as the 2018 Camp Fire in California and the 2021 Marshall Fire in Colorado, are often characterized by extremely rapid growth rather than just crown fire dynamics.

In response to increasing wildfire risks, there is a growing emphasis on the need for actionable data in firefighting operations. Guy Schumann, CEO of RSS-Hydro, notes that the challenge lies in ensuring geospatial technology and AI-driven insights reach responders in formats that align with established emergency protocols. This is particularly critical as regions in Europe, including Germany and Scotland, face unprecedented wildfire challenges, including fires in carbon-rich peatlands that can burn underground.
