Wildfire risks increase amid concerns over firefighter equipment and training
Concerns are rising regarding the ability of firefighters to combat increasing wildfire activity due to inadequate equipment and training. In Berkshire, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) responded to 176 vegetation fires in the first half of 2026, including two classified as wildfires. The number of wildfires attended by RBFRS has risen significantly from three incidents in 2024 to 24 so far in 2026.
Freedom of information requests indicate that half of the fire services in the UK lack specialist personal protective equipment (PPE) for wildfires. RBFRS confirmed it does not possess such equipment. Experts warn that inadequate gear can lead to crew members overheating or removing protection, exposing them to heat, smoke, and radiation. Additionally, training shortfalls exist, with fewer than 10% of crew members in some areas qualified for wildfire operations.
Globally, wildfire risks are intensifying due to climate change, extreme weather, and land management issues. While many fires are contained early, a small percentage of severe fires account for the vast majority of burned areas. Wind-driven embers are identified as a primary cause of structure ignitions, as they can travel ahead of fire fronts to ignite buildings and infrastructure.
