Wildfire risks rise in Mississippi and Arkansas amid burn bans

Wildfire risks are escalating across parts of the southern United States, leading to widespread burn bans and increased pressure on emergency services.

In Copiah County, Mississippi, authorities have issued an urgent call to heed a burn ban following 13 fires in just four days. These incidents have torched hundreds of acres and stretched volunteer fire departments to their limits due to extreme heat. One recent fire on McCardle Ridge Road resulted in charges of animal cruelty and burning during a ban after an individual allegedly used a shed to burn animals.

Similarly, in Arkansas, nearly all 75 counties are under a burn ban as of August 20. Experts from the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture warn that a high-pressure system combined with long-term drought has created a ‘boiling pot’ for wildfires. Many counties are currently facing moderate to high wildfire danger, with officials advising residents to clear leaf litter from gutters and roofs to reduce potential fuel.
