Wildfire Smoke Delays EAA AirVenture Cup Race in Wisconsin

The EAA AirVenture Cup race in Wausau, Wisconsin was postponed on Sunday because wildfire smoke reduced visibility to about one and a half miles, far below the six‑mile minimum required by the FAA for safe racing. Organizer Eric Whyte said the race window was extended to 8 p.m. and, if conditions do not improve, the competition will be attempted again on Monday, with southerly winds expected to clear the haze.

Despite the smoke, EAA officials said the broader AirVenture event remains on schedule. Pilots are allowed to set their own limits on flying in hazy conditions, and the organization has prepared indoor facilities for visitors seeking relief from heat and reduced visibility. The event continues to attract participants and spectators from across the region.
