Wildfire Smoke Poses Broad Health Threats in Europe

Scientists and health agencies warn that smoke from recent wildfires in Europe carries a toxic mix of pollutants, including fine PM2.5 particles, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and, when fires reach urban areas, plastics, paints and heavy metals. The fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream and affect virtually every organ. Studies cited by the World Meteorological Organization and published in journals such as the European Heart Journal link prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke with higher rates of respiratory irritation, cardiovascular events, strokes, mental‑health disorders, pregnancy complications and even certain cancers. Elderly people, individuals with asthma, cardiovascular disease or other pre‑existing conditions are especially vulnerable. Health authorities recommend the use of high‑grade masks (FFP2/N95), limiting outdoor activity during high‑pollution periods and monitoring air‑quality alerts.

The pollutants can travel hundreds of kilometres, affecting populations far from the fire source. While fires in forested areas mainly release combustion products from vegetation, those that reach cities add synthetic chemicals that increase toxicity, raising concerns for urban dwellers across France, Spain and other affected nations.
