Wildfire Smoke Triggers Air Quality Advisories Across British Columbia

Smoke from dozens of wildfires in British Columbia is deteriorating air quality and visibility across a wide stretch of the province. Regions experiencing poor conditions include Fort Nelson, Peace River, Williston, Prince George, McGregor, Fraser Canyon, South Thompson, West Kootenay, Kootenay Lake and East Kootenay. The smoke is also moving southward onto Vancouver Island, where it is expected to settle over Greater Victoria for several days. Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index remains in the low‑risk range (2‑3), but health officials advise limiting strenuous outdoor activity, especially for people with respiratory or heart conditions, pregnant individuals, children, seniors and anyone otherwise vulnerable. The province currently reports 105 active fires, 39 of which are out of control; 83 were ignited by lightning and 13 by human causes, with 16 fires reported in the last 24 hours.
