Wildfire strikes Boqueirão da Onça National Park in Bahia
A large-scale forest fire has been burning in the Boqueirão da Onça National Park in northern Bahia since Thursday, October 15. The flames are spreading through areas between the municipalities of Sento Sé and Campo Formoso, causing significant concern for residents in nearby rural communities.
Local reports indicate the destruction of native Caatinga vegetation and the death of wild animals. A task force of approximately 30 people, including volunteer firefighters, local residents, and technical teams from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), is working to contain the active fire fronts and prevent the blaze from reaching protected areas and difficult-to-access valleys.
Official environmental agencies have not yet released a formal assessment regarding the total area affected or the specific causes of the fire. A full report on the damage to local flora and fauna is expected once the extent of the impact is clarified.
