Croatia wildfire kills one and forces mass evacuations near Omis
A massive wildfire on Croatia’s Adriatic coast has caused at least one death and dozens of injuries, prompting the evacuation of approximately 1,200 residents and tourists. The blaze erupted near the village of Lokva-Rogoznica on Thursday evening and spread rapidly toward the tourist town of Omis, fueled by strong winds. Fire chief Slavko Tucakovic described the event as one of the worst in the country’s history, noting that the flames consumed roughly 1,000 hectares in just four hours.
Emergency services reported that ten people were in intensive care, with several others in life-threatening condition. The fire caused significant property damage, including 58 houses, 36 vehicles, and 25 vessels. In some instances, residents were forced to seek refuge in the sea to escape the advancing flames.
Over 300 firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze. While the fire has largely been brought under control, authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage and investigating the cause. Local officials have declared the event a major disaster, enabling the mobilization of necessary communal services and emergency responders.
