Portuguese Army soldiers killed in A1 highway accident

Two Portuguese Army soldiers, aged 21 and 22, died on Friday after being struck by a vehicle on the A1 highway near the Mealhada service area in Cantanhede. The incident occurred at kilometer 204.8 while the soldiers were providing voluntary assistance to a truck driver whose vehicle had suffered a tire blowout.

The soldiers were returning to their base following a week-long mission involving the assembly of a military bridge in São Pedro do Sul. Following the accident, the Portuguese Army initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances and activated psychological support mechanisms for the families of the deceased.

President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro both expressed their condolences, praising the soldiers' courage, sense of duty, and altruistic actions.
