Wildfires in Northern Michigan prompt evacuations
Firefighters are battling two active wildfires in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, specifically within Marquette and Baraga counties. The blazes are being fueled by drought conditions, warm temperatures, and strong winds.
The Ridge Fire has burned approximately 256 acres northwest of Marquette. Due to the fire's proximity to residential areas, three homes on County Road 510 have been evacuated. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has established an evacuation center at the Negaunee Township Hall, with assistance from the American Red Cross.
The second blaze, known as the Craig Lake Fire, is located in a remote area north of Craig Lake State Park. While smaller, it is burning through rugged terrain that is difficult for crews to access.
Suppression efforts include the use of Fire Boss water-scooping planes from Minnesota and a Michigan State Police Aviation helicopter. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is coordinating with local fire departments and state police to manage the incidents.
