Wildlife authorities issue safety warnings following bear sightings in Slovakia and Slovenia
Authorities in Slovakia and Slovenia are issuing safety warnings following sightings of brown bears in areas frequented by humans.
In Slovakia, police reported a mother bear with cubs near the village of Vyšná Myšľa on the route toward Košice. Officials have urged residents and travelers to exercise extreme caution, noting that bears are still active and have not yet entered hibernation. Police warned that mothers protecting their young may react defensively if they feel threatened and advised the public not to approach, photograph, or attempt to scare the animals.
In Slovenia, the Dramlje Fire Department has alerted locals to bear sightings near Dramlje. Experts emphasize that while attacks are rare, they often occur when a bear is surprised and feels unable to retreat. Safety guidelines for hikers include keeping dogs on leashes, making noise while walking in dense areas to avoid startling wildlife, and retreating calmly if a bear is spotted from a distance.
