Wildlife concerns rise in Romania and Ukraine

In Argeș County, Romania, authorities have reported an increase in bear sightings near residential areas. Between August 17 and August 24, the Gendarmerie received 22 emergency calls regarding the presence of wild animals in populated zones, including Sălătrucu, Arefu, and Cotmeana. In two instances, bears caused damage by attacking domestic animals.

Emergency services (ISU Argeș) have also responded to reports in several localities. In one case, a Ro-Alert message was issued to warn residents to avoid contact with the animals. Authorities advise citizens to remain indoors and avoid approaching, photographing, or feeding bears when they are spotted near homes.

Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, elderly residents in Odesa continue to care for abandoned animals amidst ongoing conflict. One 74-year-old woman, Olga, feeds approximately 50 cats daily, navigating ruins and bomb-damaged areas despite frequent air raids and power outages. The situation highlights the growing number of displaced or abandoned animals in war-affected regions.
