Wildlife fatalities rise in Burgenland and Graubünden
Recent statistics reveal significant wildlife mortality rates in Burgenland, Austria, and Graubünden, Switzerland. In Burgenland, approximately 23 wild animals die daily due to road traffic, totaling 8,405 deaths during the 2025/26 hunting year. The Neusiedl am See district recorded the highest impact, accounting for nearly 47 percent of the province's road-related wildlife losses.
Beyond traffic accidents, disease has played a major role in wildlife decline. In Burgenland, total wildlife losses reached 25,506, with European hares being the most affected species. Nationally in Austria, rabbit deaths surged by 120.8 percent compared to the previous year, largely attributed to the spread of myxomatosis.
In the Swiss canton of Graubünden, police reported over 800 wildlife-related accidents in a single year. Authorities have issued warnings regarding increased risks during twilight, nighttime, and seasonal migrations in spring and autumn. Drivers are advised to exercise caution on forest roads and rural paths, particularly following daylight saving time changes when visibility is reduced.
