Wildlife feeding: Best practices for garden owners in winter

Gardeners can support local wildlife, such as birds, hedgehogs, and squirrels, during the autumn and winter months by providing additional food and water sources. While the classic feeding period for wild birds is considered to be from November to February, experts note that birds can be supported throughout the entire year.

Steffi Reckenfeld, a product manager at Raiffeisen-Märkte, advises that energy-rich fat food is particularly suitable for winter feeding, whereas providing clean water sources is highly valuable during the summer. Sunflower seeds are noted as a safe and reliable option for various species.

Maintaining hygiene by regularly cleaning feeding stations and refilling them is essential. While birds and squirrels remain active, hedgehogs hibernate and only require assistance in specific circumstances.
